Now that you have your wedding dress sorted, what about your mum?

It might seem like a lifetime ago that you first went to try on wedding dresses, and you might be starting fittings for your dress? Preparations are ramping up for your big day, one question remains… what is your mother going to wear? It is becoming increasingly popular to complement the wedding theme with the mother of the bride to ensure she blends perfectly with the overall wedding. Here are some key tips from Catherine to ensure the Mother of the bride outfit shopping is as stress free as possible:

  • Don’t try to compete with the mother of the groom! Traditionally the mother of the bride outfit should dictate what the mother of the groom wears, but this is quite old fashioned. Some couples take both mothers shopping together, while others keep the outfits separate. Work with your mothers and ensure they are happy with what makes them feel comfortable
  • Colours to be avoided for ‘mother’ outfits include ivory, white or champagne shades, plus black and red. It is best for the bride and the mothers to establish what the colour theme for the wedding is, and some tones that would easily complement the theme. Pastel pinks, navy, purples and other tonal colours look fabulous against the ivory of the daughter’s dress, so communicate!
  • Select a style that suits your mother’s trend, and also that she is comfortable in! Don’t try to dress your mum in a strapless gown and high heels when she just won’t be comfortable in that style of dress. There are endless options for mother of the brides nowadays, and whether you select high street or specialist boutique there is an outfit to suit all styles.
